It is Christmas time, many of us started wrapping gifts, treating special someone, spending happy moments to people we feel important in our lives and some of us are now having a joyful time with their loved ones... But, at the end of the day, have we asked ourselves, what is the real essence of Christmas, of celebrating the day of our Savior?
A saddening truth... Our fellow Filipino people are still suffering for the lost of their parents, children, wives, husbands, friends and loved ones... People whose lives are now in chaos after the wrath of Typhoon 'Sendong'... People who needed our help...
As reality dictates, soldiers are given time to at least celebrate this season with their families... Soldiers who are bound to fight fatigue, loneliness and separation from their families are scheduled to have a break, to rest... However, what lies in every soldier's heart is an important thing, and that is to be able at any moment to sacrifice for the betterment of the Filipino people. At our country's most difficult time, every soldier wanted to make sure that the victims of Typhoon 'Sendong' will have the basic of comforts and live for a moment the essence of this season...
Soldiers gave up their time for their loved ones to sacrifice, to serve, to help and to lend hand to those who needed them the most... That is what every soldier's heart states, the true essence of Christmas is not to become a person who places himself in comfort while difficult truths bite but a person who thinks so little of himself and sacrifices to help, to serve... |

As the 53rd Commanding General of the Philippine Army takes his exit from the military service, the Army Troopers Newsmagazine pays tribute to Lt Gen Arturo Bayuga Ortiz.
His climb to the ladder of success did not come easy. His early childhood and teen years saw him and his older brother engaging in odd jobs to help their parents in supporting and sending them to school. He entered the military service and the rest is history.
In this ATN special issue, we feature Lt Gen Ortiz’s values nurtured by his parents and those he acquired while in the military service as he went about with his life until he became the Commanding General of the Philippine Army, Armed Forces of the Philippines’ premiere branch of service.
Read more about him as described by people who love him and the legacies he will be leaving to the Philippine Army.
